If you're looking at the Exped 8R Long Wide Sleeping mat, then you're either after extreme comfort, or you're heading to the extreme cold. It honestly doesn't matter which reason you're looking at one though because on both fronts it delivers 9cm thick, down insulated comfort that will keep you comfortable in 15ºC or -40ºC, whatever's your jam.

The new Exped Dura 8R LW is the new replacement model of mat from the previous Downmat 9 LW.  The down insulation technology is what made Exped the outright leaders in insulated mats for extreme cold that are also lightweight and this new series improves on that legacy. How? Increased durability and it is also now 100% carbon neutral as well as the shell being made from 100% recycled fabric. 

With an R-value of 7.8 and a comfort rating of -40ºC this is the obvious choice for anyone going to extreme cold environments in alpine or polar regions. However because of the generous dimensions and 9cm thick comfort, it's also for those that are using it for a long time or just those that can afford a couple more grams for the added comfort. Basecamps will be cosier with this one that's for sure.
